Rheumatism is a general term that includes inflammation, degeneration, or metabolic derangement of the connective tissue structures of the body especially the muscles, joints, and related structures such as the bursae, tendons, and fibrous tissue. This term is occasionally used as a "nonspecific diagnosis" while tests are performed to establish a specific diagnosis.
