Article – Use of Pharmacotherapy and Psychotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder

Over 300 million people worldwide, or 4.4% of the world’s population, have depressive disorders. As the leading cause of disability worldwide, depression results in substantial impairment and reduced quality of life. In the United States, the economic burden of major depressive disorder has been estimated to exceed $210 billion per year. The two major treatment modalities for the disorder are pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, and both treatments have been proven efficacious.
